A Movement for Equality
This is not my country.
This is the beginning of a movement for equality.
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Says our Lady Liberty. America has lost it’s heart, the very soul of which makes us American.
Our founders, whose vision and courage created this nation, knew one simple truth, which was self evident. “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Our government’s role is simply to secure these rights for it’s people. A creation of man, it derives it’s power from the consent of the governed. As it has been shown in the past week, the majority of this country does not consent to the actions of Donald Trump’s government.
Our founders agreed that, “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alert or abolish it, and to institute a new Government, lay its foundation on such principles and organizes its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
They intelligently called for, “Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes.” Indeed prudence should be taken, and we do not call for the abolishment of government, as history has shown that to be a dangerous path. However, the actions taken by Donald Trump’s government in its first week show that it does not represent the people, and as such should be altered.
Our founders knew that change was hard, that many of us could easily suffer evil instead of changing that which we are used to, “all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.” Inertia is real, apathy the body’s natural state.
Today needs to be different. For we are seeing the beginning of “a long train of abused and usurpations, pursing invariable the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Depotism.” This government is abusing our Muslim citizens, accepted immigrants, usurping the values of what is means to be American, and beginning a siege of Depotism on our press and our scientific and rational values. As citizens of this country, “It is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
The short history of the present President, Donald Trump, is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these citizens.
To alter, not to abolish, this government, we call for non-violent, citizen and private-sector led, strikes against the economy that props up this government. This is not an armed conflict; these are our country-people, our fellow Americans. But this is not a government who we can work for. The only way to bend this government, led by a self-proclaimed businessperson, is to unionize as citizens and bring the economy that powers this government to its knees. There are two ways to make governments listen, through economic pressure or military pressure. This is not a time for military action. We must strike. If you are a business owner, pay your employees to stay home. If you are an employee and can truly afford to, walk away from your work tomorrow and march instead. Technology companies should turn off their tools, taxi drivers should refuse to pick up passengers from airports that detain immigrants, citizens should march, not work.
If you believe in the equality of women and men, strike.
If you believe that our leaders should treat women with respect, strike.
If you believe that immigrants built this country, that we are stronger by our diversity, and that our better human nature should drive us to welcome refugees, strike.
If you believe that we are an enlightened society built on reason and science, which tells us that human-made climate change is real, strike.
If you believe in the equality of future generations, our children and grandchildren, whose futures we are strangling with our carbon emissions, strike
If you believe in the marriage equality for all people, strike.
If you believe in the equality of all races and ethnicities in the country, strike.
If you believe in a woman’s right to choose and make decisions over her own body, strike.
If you believe that the 22 million uninsured Americans who now have insurance deserve to be covered, strike.
If you believe in religious equality, that religion and state should be separate, that our immigration policies should not be religious based, and all Americans’ have the right to practice whatever religion they choose, strike
If you believe in the importance of a neutral press, and that Trump’s governments’ attack on the press are designed to reduce, leading to despotism, strike.
If you believe in a more equitable system of income and that those who have become wealthy off of the work of the populace should pay a larger share, strike.
Let us strike for equality in this nation, recognizing that we are first humans, before we are a gender, a race, a religion, a nationality.
Let us, together, as a nation, demonstrate that this nation, this economy, this country is only that, the collective work and will of it’s people.
